Q: When you revise, what do you actually do? What kinds of changes do you make? (Do you revise your writing? Or, is revision an after thought)
A: I rarely revise my papers. When I write a paper, the first thing I write is usually what I'm going to hand in. I might read over it once and make a FEW minor changes, but that's it. Though, this probably explains why it takes me so long to write a paper. I usually wait till the last minute to write a paper, and thus stay up all night writing it. Some would say this is a problem, but I have the grades to show it is not. If it works, it works, right?

Does it work? I procrastinate, too. That's what we do when we take on stuff that we must or that we are unsure about. Still, I recognize that writing well involves process -- and that means time and repetition.
ReplyDeleteLather. Rinse. Repeat. Like the shampoo bottle recommends.
I have found that a similar process works for me as well. It gets frustrating though, since you have such a limited amount of time to produce the work you want, exactly the way you want it. But when i go back and re-read my papers, I do it on a printed out copy. For some reason its easy to find mistakes and make changes.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Shampoo theory of Dr. Lay, i have found that too much time and focus on one thing can a lot of time change the entire focus of your paper so be careful with that.
I tend to do the same thing. I feel like I spent so much time writing the paper that I am just tired of it in general and do not want to reread it to revise it. I guess that is why they say to leave it there and come back to it. I just tend to never come back to it.
